Haven, a paranormal romance, by Celia Breslin

Welcome, Celia! So glad to have you here today. Tell us a little about your current release, Haven:

Haven is literally the name of the dance club my heroine Carina owns in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco.  Haven defined means “a place of safety or refuge.” This is one of the book’s core themes.  How do you make a haven for yourself in the world, and, how far will you go to protect it?

Estranged from her three brothers, Carina creates a home for herself with her best friends. And with her bisexual friend and business partner Adrian, she builds a dance club in the Castro, a safe space where *everyone* – regardless of race, religion, sexual preference – is welcome.

Her sense of home and safety is threatened by the emergence of vampires in her life on both Teams Good and Evil.

Here’s the back cover blurb for more info:

San Francisco nightclub owner Carina Tranquilli works hard, plays hard, and never allows the death of her parents and her twelve-year memory gap to get her down. But her life takes a left turn when a witch attacks her on her twenty-fifth birthday.

Three hauntingly familiar vampires emerge to reveal she possesses a latent power. To protect her from their enemies, they admit to wiping her memories clean and abandoning her as a child, but now they need her help. As she struggles to evade her new protectors and even newer enemies, she meets Alexander, an enigmatic, undead musician. Insta-lust flares, leaving her wanting more.

With evil’s minions hounding her every move, and everything she thought she knew turned on its head, Carina must harness her burgeoning power, unravel her vampire family’s web of deceit, and fight to have a love life…without getting killed in the process.

What are you working on now? Do you have any releases scheduled for this year?

The second book in the Tranquilli Bloodline Series is in the works, along with a short story starring Stella, one of the fierce vampires from Team Good. A short story prequel, Vampire Code, released last month (October, 2013), starring Jonas (also of Team Good). When a naughty newbie vampire injures Carina, her mentor and protector Jonas The Executioner gets a bit cranky about it and punishes the offender and his maker. Code Breakers beware.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

I have a lot of stories and characters running amok in my mind. ;-) I love getting them out on the virtual page and sharing them with readers.

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, character, or…?

Characters come to me first. And they eventually tell me what they want to do. :-)

Do you have a favorite time of day for writing?

Late morning.

Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

All my Haven characters hold a piece of my heart, but I hope Carina will forgive me if I confess her mentor Jonas is my favorite. An ancient vampire originally from England, Jonas embodies extreme violence in a pretty package.  He’s a man of few words, dark and moody, fiercely loyal and violently protective of those few people he loves (such as Carina). I adore Jonas so much I gave him his own story, Vampire Code.

What is your favorite memory from childhood?

Spending time with my Irish grandmother. She would bake or knit and tell me stories of the Fae.  I wrote up one of my favorites — about her encounter with the Banshee — and you can read it on my blog: http://celiabreslin.com/2013/10/31/halloween-happiness-banshees-pumpkin-bread/

Where is your favorite place in the world?

Wherever my husband and daughter are. :-)

What is your favorite food?

Japanese (especially sushi), Thai, Burmese

Do you listen to music while you write?

Yes, depending on the mood of my Muse. Sometimes she likes silence. For Haven, Muse enjoyed primarily House, Techno, Electro and Industrial music.  Haven’s playlist is on Spotify.

Also: These are few of my favorite things:

1.  Joss Whedon’s work (all of it!)

2.  Soy Thai Iced Tea

3.  Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark Series

And now, Celia has a quetion for you all: Do you read vampire romance? Have a favorite series? A favorite vampire from print or TV?

And a Giveaway! Celia will be giving one lucky commenter an e-book copy of Haven.

Excerpt:

A wave of energy rolled into me, curled itself possessively around my body, and gave me one hell of a head rush. “Oh, wow.” I swayed.

Adrian tightened his grip on my waist. “Carina?”

Mark and Ren stalked over, faces grim.

“Did– Do you–” My mouth was so dry I could barely speak. “Do you guys feel that?”

Adrian frowned, his blue eyes clouded with concern. “Feel what?”

I started to tell them the Invisible Man was hugging me against an electrified fence but another wave of energy bowled into me, making me tingle from head to toe. The sensation walked the line between pleasure and pain. A moan escaped me.

Mark took me from Adrian. “That’s it. We’re out of here.” He tried to pick me up, but I shook my head. Bad idea. Dizziness took the hall and me for a little spin.

Turn around. Turn. Around.

Was it a voice or instinct urging me on? Either way, the desire proved irresistible. I pulled away from Mark, pivoted, and forgot how to breathe.

The electric energy pulled back. The dizziness abated. All extraneous noise and people drained out of my perception until there was only…Him.

He was tall and fit and bad-boy handsome, with skin like pale honey, hair thick and walnut brown, tousled in a sexy, I-just-got-out-of-bed way. Hip, black, custom-fit button-down and slacks showed off his sculpted upper body and long legs. The whole package made my mouth water.

Hot. Yummy. Totally my type.

“Who are you?” I whispered.

His mouth twitched in a hint of a smile as if he’d heard me, which was impossible given the distance between us. Heat spread through me and my pulse sped up. I was nervous. Guys never made me nervous, not even gorgeous ones.

What’s wrong with me?

I took a little nibble on my lower lip. His gaze tracked the movement and when his eyes locked onto mine again, the heat from his stare hit me between the eyes. And legs. Energy rocked me again, a warm, electric breeze, caressing my skin. My eyes widened in comprehension. The energy came from him.
